Dr. Antoni Goral is among a select number of specially trained surgeons in the area approved to use a less invasive knee prosthesis to help knee replacement patients make a quicker recovery to daily activities. Dr. Goral has received special training to use the Oxford® Unicompartmental Knee. This prosthetic knee is the only one in the United States that replaces one of the three compartments that forms the knee joint with a free floating meniscal bearing. This bearing helps limit the forces and stresses experienced by the implant that may lead to eventual loosening and wear.
Unlike traditional total knee joint replacement, which can require a six to eight inch incision to resurface the cartilage in all three compartments of the knee, this minimally invasive procedure resurfaces one compartment of the knee using a smaller incision.
Dr. Goral states that not all patients will be candidates for the unicompartmental knee. This prosthesis is intended for patients with osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease), or avascular necrosis (temporary or permanent loss of blood supply to the bone that may lead to bone collapse) and it is limited to the medial (inner thigh side of the leg).
